Photovoltaic technologies can convert roughly 10% to 20% of energy from the sun directly into electricity.
Since many areas of the United States have the potential to employ PV technologies - see the solar map - to produce a significant portion of their electricity needs with little or no environmental pollution.
The development of PV is recognized as a critical part of an environmentally responsible national energy policy. The "PV Roadmap", an industry led effort to assess the best mix of research and market development supports to accelerate PV development, predicts that with a reasonable set of incentives the solar photovoltaic market in the U.S. could grow more than 30% per year over the next 20 years, from 340MW of installed capacity to 9600 MW.
